Look for the Eagle in San Antonio and you
might be confused, but it’s there. Just not where
you’d expect it.
The Eagle name has long been associated with
leather bars since the first Eagle’s Nest in New
York City. That bar was a metamorphosis of a
place known as the Eagle Open Kitchen, formerly
a longshoreman’s bar on the lower West Side.
Shortly after the Stonewall riots it was acquire by
a new owner who transformed it into what we
now would recognize as a leather bar.
It just popped up on the gay scene.
In November, appropriately on Black Friday, the
Eagle SA opened inside Knockout, a bar already
known for it’s buff and bear crowd. Seems like a
natural fit for an Eagle.
“We have not had a leather bar formally
years,” says John Barker owner of the new
Eagle San Antonio. “So many organizations are
reaching out to hold events and express their
excitement for The Eagle SA. We have received
an overwhelming response.”
Already the Eagle SA has become the home bar
of the San Antonio Leathermen organization
and with the bar hosting Gear Night, and
Bear Night Out already the future for the new
establishment looks bright.
John Barker says, “We are glad to provide the
community with a place to gather and are excited
to see the community grow!” The Eagle SA is at
1420 N. Main St. with s side door entrance on
Evergreen.
