Queer “Creature Features” Save the World?

Queer joy keeps our hearts full, but when queer folx face being targeted again, maybe it is queer “Creature Features” and K-drama-inspired revenge tales that will save the day. There is powerful narrative magic in seeing wrongdoers who hurt others finally put in their well-deserved place. Mister Mama Bear Productions introduces two compelling new projects: a techno-thriller TV series based in Austin, and a thought-provoking short film that delves into the impact of religious trauma with a monstrous twist.

Mister Mama Bear Productions is a disruption studio—not only in narrative approach and formats—but also in organization and access. This is not a brick-and-mortar studio with a hierarchy of executives and a costly and time-consuming game of red light/ green light. Instead, it is a coalition of skilled creators and volunteers who show new creators how to get the resources they need and the staffing (on both sides of the camera or microphone) to get their initial offering across the finish line all the while leaving full creative, financial, and distribution control in the hands of the new creator. The studio simply asks that after finishing their project the creator pay it forward by committing fully to do the same on a project that resonates with them for another new creator when they start their journey.

At Mister Mama Bear Productions, there is a deep understanding that WHO tells the story and WHAT stories that they may even be allowed to tell are still systematically gatekept, even in what appears to be a more “freewheeling” and accessible climate. Despite big screen successes with “for us, by us” narratives like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Black Panther,” these types of stories remain only a sliver of projects that get produced by most studios.

Mister Mama Bear Productions is not even invested in those metrics though. What matters is you have a story you want to see made into reality whether it is trivial, vast, kinky, weird, tame, mundane, or mind-blowing—come to a Mister Mama Bear Productions open casting call to pitch your project to our creators who will show you HOW to get it done, not IF it can be done. Our studio works closely with the Austin Public “producer program” of the Austin Film Society and the KOOP “volunteer to showrunner” program track. Open casting calls are at Buzzmill on Mondays from noon until 2.
